Dr. Ronald Prier has been a faculty member of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine since 1991. In addition to his appointment with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, he is an associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics with the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health. Dr. Prier also serves as the Director of Medical Student Education and the Vice Chairman for Education with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, and the Director of the General Psychiatry Training Program at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Columbia, South Carolina.
Dr. Prier's professional experience includes numerous positions in the U.S. Army. He served a total of 26 years in the United States and abroad, retiring with the rank of Colonel, Medical Corps, in 1994. He has also held a faculty appointment at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland.
Receiving an undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, Dr. Prier earned a doctor of medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. He also received a master of public health from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, Md. He completed a preventive medicine residency at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington, D.C., and a psychiatry residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. Dr. Prier is board certified in general preventive medicine and psychiatry, with added qualifications in addiction psychiatry. His special interests are mood and anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, and epidemiology.
