Patient Guide FAQs

What is the relationship between the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and University Specialty Clinics?

The University Specialty Clinics is the patient care or clinical practice of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. The physicians of University Specialty Clinics serve as School of Medicine faculty members (teachers of medical students and residents) as well as practicing physicians who take care of patients.  With approximately 209 practicing physicians, University Specialty Clinics represents a partnership between academic medicine, community hospitals, healthcare organizations and private clinicians.

How do I find a University Specialty Clinics doctor?

A directory of University Specialty Clinics physicians can be found in our online "Physician Search" directory.  You can also call our main office at (803) 255-3400 for assistance.

Which hospitals are part of University Specialty Clinics?

Patients are seen by our healthcare providers in one of our convenient clinical locations.  Because we don’t own our own hospital, we have partnered with several hospitals to provide in-patient care and residency training, including:

  • Palmetto Health Richland
  • Dorn VA Medical Center
  • Greenville Hospital System
  • William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute
  • James F. Byrnes Center for Geriatric Medicine, Education and Research
  • South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium

For those patients seen at one of our clinics, if hospital care is needed, you will be admitted to Palmetto Health Richland or the Dorn VA Medical Center (if eligible).

What do I do if I have insurance or billing related issues?

Please click the Billing and Insurance tab above, which provides complete information about our policies.

If you have questions regarding your insurance coverage, you will need to contact your insurance carrier. If you need us to help you understand your coverage or for more information about University Specialty Clinics policies, please call us at (803) 255-3400
